A varied and well-balanced vegetarian diet can provide all of the nutrients you need for good health. In fact a vegetarian diet closely matches healthy eating recommendations for the general population, these being to eat a diet low in saturated fat and high in fibre with plenty of breads, grains, cereals, fruits and vegetables, moderate amounts of protein foods and small amounts of added fats and sugars. Research has shown that there are many health benefits associated with eating a vegetarian diet.

Following a vegetarian diet does not just mean cutting out meat! To ensure that you get all of the nutrients you need for good health it is important that you eat a wide variety of foods including breads and cereals, fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds and calcium-fortified soy products. Those who eat eggs and dairy products can also include these foods regularly.

Nutrients of concern in a vegetarian diet include iron, zinc, calcium and vitamin B12 but a well planned diet can ensure that requirements for all of these nutrients are met.

If you are considering changing to a vegetarian diet or have followed a vegetarian diet for a while and want to ensure you are meeting all of your nutritional requirements, we can help you. Whether you follow a vegan, lacto, lacto-ovo or semi-vegatarian diet we will tailor an eating plan to suit your needs and lifestyle. For more information or to book at appointment, phone 9415 4845 or email reception@nnd.com.au

Kate follows a vegetarian diet herself and is the Chairperson of the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) Vegetarian Interest Group.  She regularly writes for the Australian Vegetarian Society Magazine and is co-author of The Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook.
