 irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) Minimize

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common gastrointestinal disorder with symptoms including abdominal pain, bloating, wind, urgency, a feeling of incomplete defaecation, constipation, diarrhoea or a variable bowel habit.

IBS most commonly occurs in people between 20 and 60 years of age and is more common in women than men. Symptoms are often worse with stress and may be worse at different times of the menstrual cycle in women.

There are a number of lifestyle and dietary factors which can aggravate symptoms of IBS and eating a healthy diet can help many people to improve their symptoms.

Most people with IBS should eat a balanced diet with an adequate intake of fibre and fluids. Eating small regular meals and avoiding eating on the run can also help.

Some people with IBS may have a sensitivity or intolerance to certain foods including lactose in milk products and wheat or gluten in cereals. An elimination of these foods can be worthwhile where modification of fibre and fluid intake does not help.

If you suffer from IBS and would like some advice in modifying your diet, we can help you. For more information or to book at appointment, phone 9415 4845 or email reception@nnd.com.au
