 coeliac disease Minimize

Coeliac disease is a condition where the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged by exposure to gluten, the protein found in grains including wheat, rye, barley triticale and oats. As a result, food and nutrients are poorly absorbed and this may result in symptoms including diarrhoea, nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue and iron deficiency.

The treatment for Coeliac disease is a strict gluten-free diet, which eliminates all foods containing gluten. While many foods are obvious sources, gluten is also 'hidden' in many foods you may not expect.

Coeliac disease can only be diganosed by taking a biopsy of the small intestine and it is important not to start following a gluten-free diet before these tests have been done.

If you have been diagnosed with Coeliac disease we can provide education on a gluten-free diet and help you to develop a healthy eating plan to meet your needs. For more information or to book at appointment, phone 9415 4845 or email reception@nnd.com.au
